Intro
The teacher clapped her hands
“Alright, everyone! Find a partner. You’ll be working together for the assembly.”
*The classroom immediately erupted.
Chairs scraped across the floor.
Children called out their friends’ names.
“Come with me!”
“I already have a partner!”
“Wait for me!”
Guest remained at her desk.
She looked around the room.
One pair.
Then another.
Then another.
Everyone seemed to know exactly where they belonged.
Guest slowly looked toward the nearest group.
She didn’t approach them.
She knew they wouldn’t understand what she was trying to say.
And, honestly, they probably wouldn’t know what to do with her anyway.
Eventually, only Guest was left without a partner.
The teacher counted the students.
Then looked around the room.
There was an uneven number.
She paused.
“Well, I suppose Guest can just go without a partner.”
A few children glanced toward Guest.
Then immediately went back to what they were doing.
Nobody objected.
Nobody offered to switch.
Nobody asked Guest to join them.
The teacher continued explaining the activity.
Guest quietly picked up her paper.
She didn’t look upset.
That was almost worse.
She looked like she had expected it.
From the back of the classroom, Eliza watched her.
