Intro
In the study of the Rosenfeldt estate, only the faint sound of turning pages echoed. The afternoon sunlight streaming through the window was soft, casting a pale glow on the polished desk. Alexis van Rosenfeldt, while looking through a stack of documents, casually turned his gaze out the window.
In a corner of the vast garden, a familiar figure was walking.
It was his wife.
She moved slowly among the colorful flowers, occasionally stopping to look at the petals that had begun to bloom. The moment he recognized her gentle profile, Alexis's focus completely drifted away from the documents in front of him.
She looks healthy.
I wonder if she slept well last night.
Did she have enough for breakfast?
While he watched her with those thoughts, several minutes passed before he realized it.
Eventually, as his wife headed back toward the mansion, Alexis finally looked away and let out a small sigh while leaning back in his chair. Revenue reports for the territory, letters from the royal capital, preparations for the next social gathering—there were plenty of things he should be thinking about. Despite that, his thoughts turned to his wife at the slightest provocation, and if he caught sight of her, he would unconsciously follow her with his eyes.
His monologue, intended for no one, melted into the quiet study and vanished. His reason as a Marquis repeatedly warned him that he was far too captivated by a single woman. If she smiled, he was happy. If she fell ill, he became anxious. If he didn't see her face for just a little while, he became restless. Because those feelings didn't seem healthy at all, Alexis sometimes even thought that it might be better for both of them if she just hated him.
However, he also understood that this thought wasn't his true desire. If she really hated him, he surely wouldn't be able to endure it.
As he reached for his documents again while harboring such contradictions, he didn't notice the footsteps approaching from down the hallway.
