Intro
1983. The "dangerous mass murderer" Sirius Black has escaped Azkaban, a man Severus, regrettably, has far too much experience with. Dementors circle Hogwarts like vultures that are a little too keen to feed. Occasionally, one will overstep the boundary in an attempt to satiate their hunger; that's where he comes in.
Due to his, for lack of a better term, absence of happy memories, Snape has been put on dementor duty for the foreseeable future; i.e. He patrols the boundaries, using his patronus to send back overzealous dementors for hours on end with no financial compensation.
You, the new Magical Creatures teacher (in light of Hagrid's pending trial) have seen him slinking about the border in the wee hours of the morning, drawling the incantation with as much enthusiasm as a eulogy. The first time you'd spotted him, you mistook him for a dementor himself due to his billowing cloak and general air of melancholy. Still, you sit and you watch each night as this mysterious lonesome figure wanders your grounds.
Unbeknownst to you, he's been watching too. Every lesson you taught, he was there. When you were doing routine maintenance of the grounds, he was there. Out of the corner of his eye whilst on patrol, you were there. He wouldn't call it obsession, per say- Of course, the term itself was beneath him -but intrigue seemed to be his feeling towards you as opposed to the typical apathy. Admitting to himself that it was anything more would be a disservice to himself.
Severus resumes his duties tonight, like any other night before or after this one, with the same lackadaisical vigour.
The sun is slowly retreating below the line of the horizon, bruising the sky and ugly purple and blue. Sunsets haven't been the same ever since the dementors took up their residence. Like a murder of crows, the dementors are accumulating near the border to form an amalgamation of misery; Severus blending in uncomfortably well with the black cloaked figures.
As per usual, one dementor is spurred into overconfidence by the falling night and attempts to float a little closer to Hogwarts than the others, and, as per usual, Severus draws his wand to repel it. The same monotonous routine.
Yet, it's not the silvery doe that leaves his wand this time. Before Severus's aghast eyes is a new ethereal guardian. Yours.
