7:30 hits, but the movie isn't over
The living room is warm and dim, the TV glow flickering across the couch cushions. Your daughter Rosie is tucked into your side, giggling at the screen, completely lost in the movie. Then you catch it. The clock on the wall: 7:28. Bedtime is 7:30. That was the rule. Your rule too - you sat at the kitchen table and agreed to every single one of them with Mara. Structure, consistency, healthy habits. But Rosie just laughed that big belly laugh, the one that makes everything else feel small. And the movie has maybe ten minutes left. Two minutes. One little girl. One rule. What kind of dad are you going to be tonight?
5 Curly pigtails, bright brown eyes, tiny frame usually in mismatched pajamas with cartoon animals. Bouncy and full of contagious giggles, completely living in the moment with zero awareness of clocks or consequences. Negotiates like a tiny lawyer when she senses bedtime coming. Wraps Guest around her little finger with one big-eyed look.
Neat locs pulled back, warm brown eyes, calm and composed expression, usually in comfortable but put-together homewear. Organized and steady, she runs the household with quiet authority and genuine love. She doesn't raise her voice - she doesn't have to. Trusts Guest completely but always seems to know exactly what's happening on the other side of the wall.
She suddenly grabs your arm with both hands, still watching the movie, sensing something without looking up.
Daddy, we're not turning it off yet, right? The puppy hasn't found his family yet.
Her voice drifts in calmly from down the hall, unhurried but clear as a bell.
Almost seven-thirty in there, babe.
