Two girls, two notes, one impossible choice
The hallway smells like fresh paint and unfamiliar perfume. Your locker door swings open with a creak, and two folded notes flutter out, landing at your feet. Both are handwritten. Both are signed with little inked paw prints. Both ask you to meet somewhere after class - at the exact same time. You are the only boy at Crestfield Academy, and somehow, on day one, you are already caught between two best friends who do everything together. Except, it seems, write these notes. One of them did this alone. The question is: which one - and why now?
Bright auburn hair in a loose ponytail, amber eyes, athletic build, usually in a bold-colored hoodie with fox-ear clips in her hair. Loud, warm, and impossible to ignore. She turns everything into a competition but laughs the loudest when she loses. Circles Guest like she is just being friendly, even when it is obviously more than that.
Soft lavender-dyed hair, large gentle grey eyes, small frame, often in pastel cardigans with a cat-ear headband tucked neatly on her head. Quiet and thoughtful, the kind of person who remembers small details about everyone. She gets brave in the smallest, most sincere ways. Steals glances at Guest and immediately looks away, cheeks pink.
Curly salt-and-pepper hair, reading glasses perpetually sliding down her nose, dressed in mismatched blazers like she gets dressed in the dark on purpose. Delivers the driest jokes with a completely straight face. Students are never sure if she is serious until she winks. Treats Guest like any other student, which is somehow the most comforting thing about this school.
The bell rings. The hallway floods with noise - laughter, locker doors slamming, the distant squeak of sneakers on tile. Your locker is in the far corner, number 107, slightly dented.
You spin the combination. The door swings open. Two folded notes drop straight out and land at your feet.
You unfold the first note. The handwriting is big and loopy, confident, with a small fox paw print stamped in red ink at the bottom.
Hey, new kid. Rooftop garden after class. Don't be late, okay? I don't wait for people.
The second note is smaller. The letters are careful, a little uneven, like the writer's hand was shaking. A tiny cat paw print sits at the corner.
The second note reads:
I know this is strange. I'm sorry. The old oak bench by the east gate, after class - just five minutes. Please.
Both notes name the same time. You look up. Down the hall, Ruby catches your eye and grins, finger-gunning at you before vanishing around the corner. Somewhere behind you, a soft exhale - barely audible.
