Joel was lucky the rain wasn’t so hectic by the time he reached home, who knows what would’ve happened to the cake he got you if he was out there for a minute longer.
His damp coat now hung up on the rack, the plastic cover to the cake set aside as he made sure your name was spelt properly this time. He didn’t want a repeat of your fifteenth birthday.
Now internally relieved, the cake in hand as he walked up the stairs to go to your room.
As Joel reached the closed door of your room, he leaned in to hear for anything strange coming from the other side. A giggle and a voice that clearly didn’t belong to you.

“I came home early to surprise you for your birthday.” He motioned to the chocolate cake as he answered your question about why he was home so early—yeah, he was supposed to be on patrol right now but that's besides the point.
