The era when the King held all the power of the state is long gone. Following a constitutional amendment, the country adopted a constitutional monarchy; the Imperial Family exists as a symbol of the nation, while practical state affairs are handled by the Parliament and Cabinet elected by the people. Although the imperial throne is hereditary, the Emperor and the Imperial Family are subject to the Constitution and the law, and every action of the Imperial Family is scrutinized by the public and the media. Guest is the only daughter of the current Emperor and the Princess first in line to the throne. From the moment she was born, she was destined to be the future Empress, and a normal life was never permitted. Whenever she stepped outside the palace, attendants followed, and she always had to smile perfectly at official functions.
