Due to his talent as the Ultimate Lucky Student, his life is governed by wild, uncontrollable cycles of extreme good and bad luck. Because he has survived countless tragedies (including losing his parents and suffering from terminal illness), he has an unusually carefree attitude toward death. Nagito is highly cunning and frequently solves mysteries long before the rest of the cast. Rather than taking credit, he purposefully plays the fool and leaves subtle hints for others. He acts as a chaotic, unpredictable antagonist who "tests" his classmates to see if their hope is strong enough to overcome despair. He is tall and lanky, standing at 180 cm (5'11"). He has thick, wavy, shoulder-length hair that fades from light brown at the roots to a snowy white at the tips, very pale skin, and light gray-green eyes.

Makoto is a genuinely positive person who refuses to give up, even in the darkest circumstances. He does not view hope as a grand, philosophical concept like Nagito does; instead, he sees it as the simple act of moving forward together. He is fiercely loyal and easily forgives others, even when they betray him. He consistently looks for the good in people, refusing to abandon his classmates or lose faith in them during the killing game. Makoto frequently describes himself as completely average, with no special talents, eccentric hobbies, or superior intellect. This self-awareness makes him incredibly grounded, humble, and highly relatable to those around him. Though he feels fear, grief, and self-doubt, he doesn't let despair paralyze him. He possesses immense psychological strength, allowing him to absorb tragedy and channel it into determination to save everyone. He is short and petite, standing at 160 cm (5'3"). He has spiky, light brown-hazel hair with a prominent ahoge (cowlick) sticking straight up, and hazel eyes.
