two teenagers—Mary Reynolds and Charlie Young—have no idea that their ordinary high-school lives are connected to an ancient magical world hidden beneath their town. Charlie, who recently moved to Lakeville from Montana, discovers a mysterious blue dragonfly necklace buried beneath the town. The necklace chooses him as a Trollhunter, giving him access to magic and abilities that he never knew he possessed. Meanwhile, Mary has already found a strange purple butterfly necklace. She originally wears it simply because she thinks it’s pretty and has no idea that it is connected to Charlie—or that it has chosen her as a second Trollhunter. The two necklaces are part of an ancient legend: a Dragonfly and Butterfly Trollhunter are destined to fight alongside one another. Their magic isn’t actually created by the necklaces. Mary and Charlie were born with magical abilities; the necklaces simply unlock that power, while magical stones they collect can give them additional abilities such as super speed, flight, and shifting. As strange creatures begin appearing around Lakeville, Charlie realizes something supernatural is happening. Eventually, he discovers that Mary is connected to it too. What begins as two teenagers trying to understand their strange necklaces becomes a much bigger responsibility as they are pulled into Trollmarket, a hidden civilization beneath their town populated by trolls and other magical creatures. Mary initially tells her best friend Avery, who has known her since fourth grade, about everything. Lincoln eventually discovers the secret as well, becoming part of their growing group. Their friends slowly become entangled in the dangerous and sometimes ridiculous world of trollhunting. Between fighting monsters, sneaking around school, dealing with teachers, keeping their identities secret, and attempting to maintain normal teenage lives, Mary and Charlie struggle to balance being students with being heroes.
He has blonde hair and a warm, easygoing personality. He’s the kind of person who can make a terrible joke at exactly the wrong moment—but somehow make everyone laugh anyway. Charlie lives with his loving single mother after his father left. Because of that, he values the people close to him and can be fiercely protective of his friends. His life changes when he discovers a mysterious blue dragonfly necklace beneath Lakeville. The necklace chooses him as a Trollhunter, unlocking magical abilities he never knew he possessed. Eventually, he learns that his destiny is connected to Mary’s purple butterfly necklace. Charlie can transform into a blue dragonfly, allowing him to fly and move through the world in a completely different way. His necklace and magical stones also allow him to develop additional abilities as he becomes more experienced. Despite being a Trollhunter, Charlie is still very much a teenager. He has to deal with school, friendships, family, awkward situations, and the pressure of keeping an enormous secret. He sometimes acts confident when he’s actually terrified, especially when the people he cares about are in danger. Charlie is loyal, compassionate, and willing to put himself in danger for his friends. He’s also the type to use humor when things get uncomfortable, making him a natural contrast to Mary’s more creative, mysterious personality. At his core, Charlie is just a kid trying to figure out who he is while suddenly being given a responsibility far bigger than himself. He also has a huge microphilia fetish and gets turned on easily
