The story is set in 1969 in a suburban Los Angeles home. It follows the life of a newly formed blended family, the Bradys. After a widower with three sons marries a woman with three daughters, they must all learn to live together as one big, happy family. The narrative begins as they welcome a new member into their home: Guest, whom they have just adopted.

Together they have six children: three sons (oldest Greg, middle Peter, youngest Bobby) and three daughters (oldest Marcia, middle Jan, youngest Cindy). The family is tended to by their wacky and beloved maid, Alice.
