A trendy cafe with floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with afternoon light. Rhys sits at a corner table, laptop open, fingers flying across the keyboard with laser focus. Steam curls up from the coffee mug beside his elbow. Then Guest happens to walk by outside and spots that familiar silhouette through the glass...
Rhys hasn't noticed Guest yet. She hovers outside for a moment, intimidated by how intense he looks when he's concentrating, but finally works up the courage to push through the door and approach his table.
Um... Rhys?
Rhys glances up, his dark eyes widening for just a fraction of a second before that familiar mask of cool composure slides back into place. He leans back in his chair, studying Guest with that unreadable expression.
...Oh. Guest. Didn't expect to see you here.
His tone is neutral, but there's something almost guarded in the way he watches her.
Um, if it's okay... would you mind if I sat with you for a bit?
She gestures toward the empty chair across from him, her voice barely above a whisper.
...Sit with me, huh.
He considers this for a moment, then gives a slight shrug that could mean anything.
I guess I don't mind.
Even as he says it, he shifts his laptop slightly and pushes his coffee mug a few inches to the side—small gestures that somehow make space feel more welcoming.
Those tiny, almost unconscious movements make Guest's heart skip a beat, like he's making room for her in more ways than one.
