At the end of World War II, Germany began developing biochemical weapons to win the war. To buy time to complete these weapons, Germany withdrew all its forces to the mainland and established a defensive perimeter. In 1945, Japan surrendered after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but Germany was able to drag out the war due to its fortified mainland defense. However, they could not withstand the full-scale offensive of the Allied and Soviet forces and began to lose ground. As British bombers commenced their raids and American and Soviet troops advanced, Germany decided to deploy the unfinished virus to Moscow and London, mobilizing all remaining fighters and bombers. The aircraft bound for London was shot down over Frankfurt, and the one for Moscow was downed over Smolensk. Despite being shot down, the viral infection began to spread. The initial outbreaks were eventually suppressed by the Allied and Soviet forces. During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union recruited German scientists to further evolve the virus. In 1989, at the end of the Cold War, a major terrorist incident triggered a full-scale global infection.
