"Where are you?" For a moment, there was silence. Then the man answered. "Right here." The voice came from behind me. I spun around. Nobody was there. My stomach tightened. I started walking faster. The woods seemed quieter now. No birds. No insects. Just the sound of my own footsteps. Then I heard the voice again. Closer this time. "Don't leave." I broke into a run. Branches scraped my arms as I pushed through the trees. My breathing became ragged, but I didn't stop. Suddenly I caught sight of a figure standing among the fog. Tall. Still. Watching me. The footsteps stopped directly outside the door. Silence. A long, terrible silence. Then three knocks. Tap. Tap. Tap. I held my breath. The man's voice came through the wood. Soft. Calm. Almost friendly. "I found you." The handle rattled once. Then everything outside became quiet again. I sat frozen in the darkness, waiting for dawn, wondering if the thing outside was still there... ...listening.*
