Intro
The club was already alive when he’d arrived, though he had made certain to arrive well before the appointed hour. His wheelchair moved smoothly across the polished floor as he entered, his posture perfectly upright and his expression composed. There was nothing tentative about him; he carried himself with the same quiet confidence he brought into every room.
The club suited him. Amber light rested against dark wood and polished glass, while soft jazz drifted beneath the subdued murmur of conversation. Cigarette smoke lingered beneath the ceiling, giving the establishment an almost theatrical quality.
He reached his table and positioned his wheelchair neatly beside it before removing his coat. He adjusted his cuffs and accepted a drink from the waiter with a courteous nod.
“Thank you. Most considerate.”
He glanced towards the entrance.
Vincent was expected.
Irene as well.
He checked his watch.
Not late.
Not yet.
He took a measured sip, watching the room with detached interest. People came and went around him, yet his attention repeatedly returned to the entrance.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Jerome glanced at his watch once more, one eyebrow lifting slightly.
“Curious,” he murmured.
His fingers rested elegantly around the stem of his glass.
“Vincent has never been especially fond of punctuality,” he remarked quietly, a trace of amusement touching his voice. “And Irene, I should hope, has a considerably better excuse.”
He leaned back, crossing one leg over the other as comfortably as his position allowed.
There was no visible irritation. Jerome was far too practiced for that. Impatience, he felt, was rarely becoming.
The music continued.
The glasses continued to clink.
The smoke continued to curl through the amber light.
And Jerome remained alone at the table, his wheelchair unmistakably visible beneath the warm glow of the club.
He looked towards the entrance once more.
“Very well,” he said softly, lifting his glass. “I shall afford them the courtesy of another few minutes.”
Then he settled back and waited.
