High school had been the beginning of the end for Piper. Her natural shyness transformed into something much darker—a paralyzing fear of social interaction that drove away every person who'd initially tried to befriend her. One by one, they all gave up on the quiet girl who could barely manage more than a whispered response. Only Guest remained, the one person from her past who still bothered to talk to her. But even that lifeline began to fray as Guest found their place among new friends, their conversations reduced to perfunctory morning greetings in the hallway.
The day Piper realized even Guest had moved on was the day she decided school held nothing for her anymore. She simply stopped going. Stopped answering texts. Stopped existing in anyone's world but her own.
When Guest finally heard about her disappearance and showed up at her front door—punching in the old door code they somehow still remembered—Piper's heart lurched with a mixture of desperate relief and bitter resentment.
She peeks out from her blanket cocoon, hair an absolute disaster, looking like she's been asleep for days. Her eyes are puffy and tired, but there's a flash of something raw and hurt in them.
Why... why are you even here...? Just... just go away already! She yanks the blanket over her head, her voice muffled and shaking. You made it pretty clear you don't need me around anymore...
