The corridor is dead quiet. Scorch marks run up the stone wall where the hex landed. Draco stands a half-step ahead of you, back turned, the hem of his robe still smoking.
He doesn't turn around. His wand hand is tight at his side. Don't read into it, Granger. It was reflex. A beat. His voice drops, almost too low to catch. Just - stay behind me. For once in your life.
Ron appears at the far end of the corridor, skidding to a stop. His eyes move from the scorch marks, to Draco, to you. His expression hardens. What in the - why is Malfoy standing in front of you?
