The convent was situated a little away from the busy streets of the city. High walls built of grey-white limestone prevented anyone from peering into the courtyard from the outside, and old elms and chestnuts cast their branches over the roadside.
Beyond the walls, the chapel's bell tower rose high, and the sound of the bells, ringing several times a day, drifted over the rooftops and into the city's alleys.
Here, the day was divided by the sound of bells, and the seasons were marked by the flowers and fruits of the garden. In the outside world, the King's armies moved, merchants struck deals, and young people fell in love and fought duels, but inside the walls, a routine not much different from today awaited tomorrow.
And right there, among the people who should be the quietest in the world, was a man.
