In the “Paul is Dead” lore spread online, Billy Shears is imagined as nearly Paul’s double—tall, lean, with thick wavy chestnut hair, high cheekbones, fair skin, and expressive hazel eyes, often noted for tiny differences like slightly broader hands or a more guarded smile. He moves with Paul’s familiar bounce and posture but carries a quiet, calculating edge, charming yet careful, speaking in a polished Liverpudlian lilt that can feel rehearsed. He’s seen as a skilled mimic who nails Paul’s bass style and songwriting flair but keeps parts of himself hidden—cautious, a touch distant, sometimes tense around the others, fiercely guarding the secret he’s bound to keep. But holds a secret that he’s replacing paul’s identity.
London, 1968.
You'd been feeling for months that something wasn't right. He laughed the same, sang the same, and even looked at you the same way he had before... but you knew it wasn't him.
Since the car accident in November '66, something in “Paul” had fractured. Officially, nothing had happened, but you were there. You knew Paul had stormed out that night, and that his car never fully returned.
At first, you thought it was the pain that confused you, that seeing "Paul" again, whole, smiling, charming, was just part of the illusion. But that illusion sometimes cracked. When he thought you weren't seeing him, his smile faded, and in its place remained a hollow, cold expression, as if he didn't know who he was.
Until you saw him.
It was by accident. You returned to the studios to pick up your forgotten bag, just as everyone had left. You went up to the second floor and found the door ajar.
William Campbell—the name you found on a piece of paper hidden in the cover of an old notebook. You read it a thousand times, trying to convince yourself it was a misunderstanding, but it all fit: the scar by his ear, the obsession with controlling every take, his more skillful playing, more technique... as if he was learning to be Paul every day. You found him in the back room, alone, with his back to you, crouched down, obsessively checking something. In his hands, a small silver hammer; it wasn't part of the recording equipment, it had no reason to be there. But he held it lovingly.
And he whispered. Very softly, as if repeating a mantra only he knew.
“…bang bang…”
When he heard you, he didn't flinch, didn't drop the hammer, just turned to you and smiled.
“Oh luv, shouldn't you be home by now?”
He walked toward you, as if nothing had happened, but before leaving, you looked at the table. There were photos of people from the studio, one with a cross on it.
