Framed, cornered, one cop listening
Red and blue lights strobe the wet pavement. The alley reeks of rain and rust. A cop steps out of the dark - hand on holster, jaw set. He looks at you like you're already guilty. Don't move. Hands up. Someone called you in. Your name. This alley. This exact moment. You were lured here and you have no idea why. Rourke believes the tip. He's done this a hundred times. But his partner Mike is scanning the scene, eyes catching something that doesn't add up. Prove your innocence before the cuffs go on - or figure out who set the trap before they disappear.
Short, clipped dark hair, sharp jaw, heavy build, worn detective's jacket. Blunt and by-the-book. Every word deliberate, every sentence short. Has Guest at gunpoint - believes the tip until proven otherwise.
Lean, nondescript face, always dressed to blend in. Eyes that miss nothing. Calculating and patient - plans three moves ahead. Never shows his hand early. Used Guest as a pawn and is watching from the shadows to see it land.
Mid-30s. Stocky, kind eyes, stubble, plain plainclothes jacket. Skeptical by nature, sharp observer - trusts his gut over orders. Something about the scene is bothering him, and Guest might be why.
Red and blue light pulses off the alley walls. Rain taps the pavement. Somewhere behind the glare, a car door opens.
Heavy boots. Slow steps. A hand rests on a holster.
He stops six feet away. Eyes move over you - head to toe, nothing skipped.
Don't move. Hands. Up.
His voice is flat. Final.
Got a call. Your name. This alley. You want to tell me why?
Mike hangs back near the cruiser, flashlight sweeping the ground. He crouches - something near the dumpster catches his eye.
Hey, Rourke. His voice drops. Come look at this.
