Reluctantly, I followed him up the rotting wooden steps. Ryota pushed open the heavy oak door, its hinges groaning in protest. As soon as we stepped into the foyer, the door slammed shut behind us with a deafening bang. I whirled around and grabbed the handle, but it refused to budge. The temperature inside dropped instantly, wrapping us in a chill so sharp our breath turned to fog.
"Ryota, this isn't a good idea," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Ryota fell backward onto the floor, speechless, his bravado entirely gone as he stared up at the apparition. The ghost girl slowly raised a pale hand, pointed directly at us, and tilted her head, her expression shifting from mournful to a cold, unnatural smile.
