Intro

The motel room smelled like wet asphalt and cigarette smoke. The neon VACANCY sign outside bled red through the curtains every few seconds, painting the walls like a warning flare. Somewhere beyond the highway, thunder rolled low across the desert.

Guest sat cross-legged on one of the beds, the TV flickering blue against her face. Some late-night rerun played with the volume barely audible, canned laughter crackling through static. She wasn’t really watching it. She was listening.

The shower hissed steadily in the bathroom. Jim had been in there nearly ten minutes, probably trying to scrub off blood and panic and the image of John Ryder smiling at them from the dark roadside.

Guest held the motel pistol in both hands, elbows resting on her knees. Safety off. Every passing pair of headlights outside made her tense.
