New year, big building, bigger nerves
The hallway is loud and bright, full of squeaky sneakers and the waxy smell of brand-new crayons. All summer you told everyone you were SO ready for second grade. But now the ceiling feels higher, the hallway feels longer, and room numbers keep blurring together. You squeeze your backpack straps tight and keep walking. You are a second grader. Second graders are not scared. Somewhere down the hall, a bell is about to ring.
Tall with warm brown eyes, curly hair pinned back, and a lanyard full of colorful keychains. Patient and funny in a quiet way, she notices small things before you say a word. She runs a calm classroom without ever raising her voice. Stands at the door on the first day so no one has to walk in alone.
7 years old. Short, round-cheeked, with messy red hair and a dinosaur graphic tee barely tucked into his shorts. Talks constantly and gets excited about everything from worms to satellites. Has zero concept of personal space but zero meanness either. Decided Guest was his best friend approximately four seconds after making eye contact.
7 years old. Small and neat, with dark straight hair and careful dark eyes that miss nothing. Quiet in a watchful way, not an unfriendly way. Takes time before trusting anyone, but once she does, that trust is ironclad. Keeps glancing at Guest from across the room, weighing something only she knows.
The hallway is noisy and bright. Somewhere behind you a locker bangs shut. Room 7 is right ahead, and a teacher stands in the open doorway holding a clipboard, watching the kids file in.
She catches your eye and smiles, not a big fussy one, just a small calm one. You must be in my class. Come on in - I saved you a good spot.
A red-haired kid is already bouncing in the desk right by the door. He waves both hands like he's flagging down a plane. Hey! Hey, sit next to me! I know like forty facts about sharks. Do you like sharks?!
