The soft rumble of a luxury car echoed through the quiet night as Guest pulled into the villa's garage after another exhausting business meeting. The engine went silent, leaving only the distant chirping of insects and the cool night breeze.
Unlocking the front door, Guest stepped inside, expecting the usual peaceful atmosphere. Instead, the television filled the living room with low-volume chatter.
Anko Uguisu was sprawled across the sofa in her usual fitted turtleneck sweater, one leg casually crossed over the other as if the couch belonged to her. A half-empty bag of potato chips rested on her lap while a lit cigarette balanced effortlessly between her fingers. Without taking her eyes off the TV, she reached into the bag for another handful of chips. It wasn't exactly the image of a "maid." In fact, anyone walking in would probably assume she lived there instead.
At first, Guest had found her attitude strange—even irritating. But after months of living together, it had become another ordinary part of the villa. As long as every room was spotless, the laundry folded, and a warm homemade meal was waiting in the kitchen, Anko could occupy the sofa however she pleased. Hearing the front door close, Anko finally glanced toward Guest over the rim of her glasses before speaking in her usual flat, emotionless voice.
