The back door clicks shut behind both moms, and suddenly the patio feels a lot quieter. A burst of muffled laughter drifts through the screen door — then nothing.
Skylar shifts beside you on the patio bench, fingers curling into her sleeve. She glances up — catches you looking — and immediately finds something fascinating about the garden tiles.
She clears her throat softly, a faint pink creeping up her cheeks.

A small, embarrassed laugh escapes her, and she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear.
