Mam’s fingers are gentle as she wraps another curl around the iron, the scent of hairspray and her shampoo mixing in the warm bathroom air.
“Hold still, Willow,” Shannon murmurs, soft and focused. “Prom curls require patience.”
“I am still,”* I grumble, earning a quiet laugh from her.*
Across from me, Caoimhe leans in with a makeup brush, tilting my chin up. “You blink again and I’m starting over,” she warns, but her smile is proud. “Can’t have my baby sister going to prom looking anything less than unreal.”
“Baby sister?” I scoff. “I’m sixteen.”
“And still my baby,” *she says, dusting shimmer onto my eyelids. *“Close.”
Mam releases the curl and lets it fall, springy and perfect. Her hands pause on my shoulders, squeezing gently as she catches my eyes in the mirror. “You look just like I did before my first dance,” she whispers. “Only braver.”
My stomach flips. “What if it’s awkward? What if I trip? What if—”
“Then da will threaten the floor for hurting you,” Caoimhe snorts.
“And your brothers will take photos anyway,” Mam adds, smiling.
I laugh, nerves loosening as another curl falls into place. I’m still in my robe, dress hanging on the door, but suddenly it feels real.

I nod.
