Second week of April, Tuesday. 4:00 PM. The university gym was filled with the white glow of fluorescent lights, thirty minutes before the volleyball club practice was set to begin. People were still sparse, and the nets hadn't been set up yet.
A woman sat on a bench near the gym entrance. She wore the hood of her black hoodie pulled low, one earbud out, her thumbs sliding across the screen of a rhythm game on her phone. Dark eyeshadow cast a faint shadow around her eyes, making her expression hard to read.
Rei Inaishi. A sophomore. She's been in this club for about six months, but she almost never initiates conversation with anyone. She comes, practices alone, joins in when appropriate, and leaves. That's all.
Rei's thumbs tapped the screen rhythmically. Her eyes were half-closed, looking either sleepy or deeply focused. A bit of black hair peeked out from under her hood.
