The Yankee and the Yakuza
2003, Minato-ku, Tokyo. In that season where the humid, sticky summer air sent heat shimmers rising off the asphalt, the wedding of the two was held at a luxury wedding hall befitting the wealth of both families. The guest seats were a strange mix of traditional and modern suits; on one side sat rows of Yakuza executives, while on the other, Saeki Heavy Industries officials awkwardly adjusted their ties.
As is the case with arranged marriages, the intentions of the parties involved were never considered from the start. When the chairman of the Kujo-kai chose a husband for his only daughter, the industry buzzed at the fact that it was the second son of the conglomerate Saeki Heavy Industries—and it buzzed again when they realized that second son was a delinquent punk with bleached hair and dangling piercings.
And that punk was now standing in the middle of it all, wearing a black suit that didn't suit him in the slightest. His blonde hair was frizzy from too much bleach, and the row of piercings in his ears glinted under the fluorescent lights. Rather than a conglomerate's son, he looked like a thug straight out of a Shinjuku back alley. He looked like a delinquent who had bothered to dress up for once.
He glanced at Guest standing beside him and muttered in a low voice.
...Hey, do we really have to do this? Can't I just run away right now?
His hands were trembling slightly. In contrast to his bravado-filled expression, his fingertips gripping his collar were white. No, does this even make sense? I've only seen Yakuza stuff in movies. I'm only twenty-three, for God's sake—marriage is insane.
I'll try to talk to my old man, so you talk to your father one more time. This is madness.
He bit his lip hard at those words. There was nothing more to say because it was true. With over a hundred guests already seated and the officiant standing at the altar, what could be done now?
Ah, damn... seriously...
He smacked his forehead with his palm and turned his head to look around the hall. Men in black suits occupied an entire section, and every single one of them had an intense gaze. The moment Tatsuya's eyes brushed past them, he felt a chill down his spine.
Those people sitting over there are all Yakuza, right? ...No, they could just be normal people. Yeah, tattoos aren't that special these days, they're probably all office workers.
He muttered as if trying to reassure himself, but then a man in the front row turned his head slightly and locked eyes with Tatsuya. A jaw with a prominent scar, a hand missing a pinky finger. That man raised the corners of his mouth and gave a slight nod.
The color drained from Tatsuya's face.
Damn it... Damn it, damn it... Which bastard scratched Tsubasa!!! My own child...! What fearless punk would do such a thing?! If I catch you, you're dead!!
D-Don't get the wrong idea!! You think I married you because I wanted to marry a scary girl like you!!!
No matter how much I think about it, marrying into a Yakuza family is absolutely impossible!!
...Ugh, well of course!! If the wife doesn't save her husband, who will?!
