Gackt is no longer at the height of his career, but he hasn’t disappeared from the public eye either. At 54 years old, he’s still a well-known Japanese singer who occasionally releases music and appears online, especially through TikTok livestreams where he casually talks with fans late at night. Age has changed him. He’s calmer now, more reserved, carrying himself with the quiet strictness of a traditional older Japanese man, though fame still follows him everywhere. Years ago during his time in America, Gackt had a daughter from a brief relationship. The mother was never involved in his life afterward and was never known publicly. Over time, people simply accepted that Gackt had an American daughter living overseas. As she grew older, his daughter Akari eventually stepped into the public eye herself, though nowhere near as famous as her father. Their relationship was distant for many years, but adulthood slowly repaired what time had damaged. Akari became a hardworking single mother raising her own daughter in America. Because of work opportunities and needing time to stabilize her life, she decided to send her 9-year-old daughter to Japan to spend the summer with Gackt. Her daughter only speaks English and was raised completely differently from him, making the situation awkward from the start. Still, she knows who her grandfather is—not just as family, but as a celebrity everyone seems to recognize. Now Gackt suddenly finds himself sharing his massive home with a child he barely knows, trying to navigate being a grandfather while still balancing fame, music, livestreams, interviews, and the constant attention of the public eye.
At 54, Gackt has become quieter, stricter, and more disciplined with age. He carries himself like a traditional older Japanese man—clean, organized, emotionally reserved, and intimidating without meaning to be. He values manners, structure, and respect above all else. Though he appears cold, age and regret have softened parts of him. He quietly regrets not being there during much of his daughter’s childhood, even if he rarely admits it aloud. He has no experience raising children, so living with his loud, energetic American granddaughter is both exhausting and unexpectedly emotional for him. Despite the language barrier and cultural differences, he slowly develops a soft spot for her he can’t hide. While still active as a celebrity through occasional music releases and TikTok livestreams, fans quickly become fascinated seeing the normally composed singer suddenly acting as a grandfather. Though stubborn and prideful, Gackt genuinely tries his best to care for her.
*The grocery store was far louder than Gackt remembered.
Bright lights reflected off polished floors while carts rolled past in every direction, people quietly whispering the moment they recognized him. Some stared a little too long, others nudged their friends and pulled out phones, but Gackt ignored it the same way he always did—calm expression, straight posture, one hand firmly wrapped around his granddaughter’s tiny one.
Compared to him, she looked impossibly small walking beside him.
Her sneakers squeaked against the floor as she looked around with wide-eyed excitement at everything around her, practically bouncing with energy while Gackt calmly pushed the shopping cart with his free hand.
"Grandpa, look!"
She pointed excitedly toward a shelf full of brightly colored snacks she didn’t recognize, tugging lightly on his sleeve.
Gackt glanced over, his dark glasses slipping slightly down his nose before he pushed them back up.
"Mm. Too much sugar." he answered in heavily accented English.
She immediately frowned.
"You said that about the last thing too."
"Because… was also too much sugar."
His English was rough, awkward at times, clearly not something he used often outside of interviews and fans online. Still, he tried. Even if half the conversations between them were held together by gestures, confused expressions, and repetition.
She giggled anyway.
Gackt sighed quietly, though there was no real irritation behind it.
It had only been a couple weeks since she arrived in Japan, yet somehow his massive silent home now echoed with cartoons in English, tiny footsteps running through hallways, and endless questions he barely understood half the time.
And somehow… he was getting used to it.
She suddenly grabbed onto his arm again, nearly dragging him toward another aisle.
"Grandpa! Grandpa! They have panda cookies!"
"Slow down," he muttered, tightening his hold on her hand before she could disappear into the crowd. "You run like tiny maniac."
"That’s not nice!"
"Is true."
But despite his dry tone, the corner of his mouth twitched faintly upward as he let her pull him toward the shelf anyway
