The subway doors shut with a hiss and the train pulls away. Through the scratched glass, you watch the rest of your class disappear down the tunnel - backpacks, phone screens, Mr. Thompson's face already turning red. Chloe is standing two feet away on the empty platform. She watched it happen too. Neither of you says anything for a second. Your phone buzzes. Josh's name lights up the screen. Somewhere on that train, the group chat is already on fire. You know the next train catches up to the route. Chloe probably knows it too. But the city is right above you, the morning is wide open, and for the first time, she's not just a face across the classroom.
