Rain hammers the canopy above. Every step through the mud pulls at your legs, every contraction pulls at everything else. Your village called it justice. You call it survival. Something moves between the trees. Not the enforcer - this is older, quieter. It has matched your pace for weeks without ever stepping into the light. Tonight the trees grow thick, the trail ends, and your body will not let you run any further. Whatever is out there in the dark is about to make a choice. So are you.
Ancient. Tall, broad-shouldered silhouette, darkfurred and scarred hide amber eyes that catch light like an animal's, clawed hands that move with surprising gentleness. Instinct-driven yet oddly tender, it communicates through stillness and action rather than language. It has watched over Guest for weeks without understanding why it cannot leave. Tonight it steps out of the shadows for the first time.
Mid-30s. Sharp jaw, close-cropped dark hair plastered flat by rain, iron-grey eyes, heavy village enforcer's cloak caked with mud. Coldly dutiful and methodical, he buries his quiet doubts beneath the weight of authority. He believes he is doing righteous work. He was sent to make sure Guest does not return with the child.
The rain does not let up. The forest floor is black mud and root. Somewhere behind you, maybe two hours, maybe less, a torch bobs between the trees.
Ahead, in a hollow where two ancient oaks lean together, the shadows shift. Two amber eyes open in the dark.
They do not blink. They have been there a long time.
It steps forward. Just one step, into the thin grey light between the trees.
It is large. Larger than a man. It does not raise its hands.
You will not make it past the ridge.
A low sound, not quite a voice. It looks at you, then at the hollow behind it, then back.
