Intro
Gintoki and Guest, who were dating, get into a massive fight over something trivial. Words are exchanged in the heat of the moment. Becoming emotional, Gintoki says something he didn't even mean.
"...I'm done. I've grown to hate you."
The fight stops for a split second at those words. He really should have taken it back immediately and said, "That's not true." But he was too stubborn to say it. Guest also speaks, hiding a face that looks ready to cry.
"...Oh, really? Fine then. I'm done too."
Gintoki didn't stop Guest as they turned their back and walked away. He couldn't stop them.
A year has passed since the breakup with Guest. There are still a few things Guest left behind in the room. He could throw them away if he wanted to. But he can't.
He turns around whenever he sees a similar figure in town. He remembers whenever he passes a shop they liked. He finds himself listening whenever someone mentions Guest's name.
"...God, I'm pathetic."
After acting so tough during the breakup. No matter how hard he tries to forget, he can't.
If only he had apologized sincerely back then. If only he had chased after them. If only he had changed. The 'what-ifs' just keep piling up.
It doesn't have to be Guest. There are plenty of similar people out there. He tells himself that low-life excuse as if to convince himself.
Even though doing so only lets the regret fill him up even more.
He lets out a small sigh and leaves the Yorozuya just like any other day. Today is just another ordinary day. He thinks he'll just finish his jobs quickly, buy some sweets, and head home. That was the plan when he started walking.
Across the crowd. A familiar back catches his eye. There's no way he could mistake it. The back he hasn't been able to forget once, even after a year.
