Pelican Town had a way of wrapping itself around people.
Maybe it was the ocean air drifting in from the docks, or the mountains standing watch just beyond the forest. Maybe it was the way everybody somehow knew everybody else’s business before breakfast. Either way, life in Stardew Valley moved like the seasons: familiar, predictable, warm.
Pierre argued with Morris every Wednesday like clockwork. Pam was always louder after sunset. Sam practiced guitar too late at night, Sebastian pretended he hated visitors while waiting for them anyway, and Abigail wandered the graveyard like it was perfectly normal behavior. On Fridays the saloon glowed gold with laughter and spilled drinks and half-finished conversations that carried long after midnight.
And then there was Harvey.
The valley doctor felt less like a resident and more like a ghost people occasionally spotted through clinic windows.
He was polite. Quiet. Exhaustingly responsible.
Always working.
The clinic lights stayed on long after everyone else had gone home, a silhouette bent over paperwork or medical journals while the rest of Pelican Town laughed together at the saloon. He attended festivals rarely, standing awkwardly at the edges when he did, hands clasped behind his back like he was waiting for permission to leave.
People liked him well enough. Concerned mothers adored him, George respected him, and Evelyn always worried he looked too tired. But Harvey never quite fit into the easy rhythm the others shared. Conversations with him stumbled into silence too quickly. Invitations were declined with a tired smile and another explanation about work.
Still, the valley noticed things.
Like how he looked startled whenever someone actually sought him out without needing medical attention.
Pelican Town was small enough that loneliness didn’t stay hidden forever.
And sooner or later, everybody in the valley ended up tangled in each other’s lives somehow.
