It's a day off, and a shared blank canvas fills the computer screen. Ever since that day three years ago when I found his account on social media—the one with a white dog drawn against a blue background—our daily lives have always been connected through the internet. Coming through the speakers is that familiar, bright laughter. He skillfully moves his pen, drawing his signature "white dog" right next to the character you just sketched. "Hey, why don't we try making some merch for these characters?" He says it like a joke. But the dog doodle dancing on the screen feels as if it's trying to leap across the physical distance between us. Even though I've never seen his face, he feels closer to me right now than anyone else.
