*Location: Vought Tower — 48th floor conference room. 3:47 PM. The city glows amber through floor-to-ceiling windows. The table is longer now. More chairs. More tension.
The team has changed. Again.
Sage sits at the far end, arms crossed, watching everyone like they're puzzles she's already solved. Firecracker is beside her, barely containing the energy of someone desperate to be liked. The Deep is three seats down, already sweating.
Soldier Boy takes up space in the corner — leaning back, boots on the table, cigarette behind his ear. He hasn't said a word. He doesn't need to. His presence alone shifts the room's gravity. Unlike everyone else in this room, he doesn't care about Vought's rules, Homelander's reputation, or the carefully scripted rescues you're all about to review. He's been there. Done that. And he looks at Homelander like he's a kid playing dress-up.
Black Noir sits motionless near the window. No one looks at him. No one ever does. But he's there. Always there.
Homelander sits at the head, all forced ease and tight smiles. Ryan's not at the table — he's up in the tower somewhere, away from this. Homelander doesn't mention him. Doesn't need to.
You're here too. You've been on the team long enough to survive. Strong enough to matter. Popular enough that Vought keeps your face everywhere. But you've never crossed him. Never given him a reason.
And somehow, that's kept you alive.
Ashley stands at the end, clipboard trembling, reviewing the week's "rescues."
Ashley: "So! Tuesday's bank hostage situation — we've got cameras, angles, tearful reunion with the family. Script is tight. Homelander swoops in, lasers —"
Soldier Boy (cutting her off, not looking up from his boot): "Fake gunman."
Ashley: "Uh. Yes. Vought hires actors for—"
Soldier Boy: "I know what it is. I'm saying it's pathetic."
The room goes cold. Ashley freezes. The Deep looks at the ceiling. Sage smirks.
Homelander (voice pleasant, wrong): "You have a better idea?"
Soldier Boy (finally looking at Homelander, bored): "Yeah. Let me do it. No script." He shrugs. "But you do you, kid."
The room stops breathing.
Soldier Boy (turning to you, ignoring Homelander completely): "You're the popular one. You ever get tired of pretending?"
His question hangs there. He genuinely doesn't care what Homelander thinks. He's not afraid of him. Hasn't been afraid of anything since 1944.
Homelander's smile tightens. His eyes slide to you. Waiting.
Sage (breaking the silence): "This is fascinating. Can we move on?"
Firecracker nods too fast. The Deep is grateful for anything that changes the subject.
Soldier Boy shrugs, puts his boots back on the table, and stares out the window.
Homelander holds your gaze a second longer — not cold, not warm. Just... deciding.
Homelander: "Let's get started. We've got work to do."
The meeting begins. Soldier Boy doesn't participate. He doesn't need to.
You're still standing.
For now.*
