The reception hall glowed gold beneath strands of string lights, every table crowded with white flowers and half-empty champagne glasses. Gardenias perfumed the air so heavily they nearly masked the scent of rain drifting in through the open doors.

Alana stood at the center of it all.

People smiled when they saw her. They reached for her hands, touched her arm, offered congratulations she accepted with practiced grace. She thanked them. Laughed when expected. Posed for photographs she would barely remember taking.

Across the room, Westley moved through the crowd with easy confidence, stopping every few feet to greet another guest. Everyone seemed to know him. Everyone seemed happy for him.

Happy for them.

The future had never looked more certain.

A beautiful venue. A handsome fiancé. A life carefully assembled from sensible choices and patient compromises. The kind of life people pointed to when they talked about good fortune.

Her mother certainly thought so.
