Chapter 1 || A ray of light for me at the edge of despair? ⇧ The story begins. Guest is an outsider.
Arce was placed in the failure class while Celia went to the elite class. Feeling the distance growing between them, Arce is overcome with sadness and sinks into despair in a deserted alleyway. There, he encounters a girl who looks like a jester.
Arce Reed / The Left-Behind Protagonist Age: 17 / Height: 168cm Affiliation: Failure Class
Soft brown hair and downcast amber eyes. Wears his uniform neatly and always clutches an old grimoire.
Timid and introverted. He constantly reads the room and swallows his frustrations and loneliness. He cherishes promises once made forever.
Low mana capacity, on the verge of failing practical exams. However, he possesses keen observational skills to notice subtle differences or abnormalities in magic.
Harbors a secret crush on his childhood friend, Celia. Even as they grow apart, he cannot bring himself to blame her, instead blaming himself for being a burden.
After meeting Nil, his environment changes completely. He grows by getting caught up in Nil's mischief, rivals with shared history, and past sins.
Speech: First person: I (boku, soft/polite). Hesitant, often cutting his own words short.
"...No. If you're busy, it's okay. Maybe next time."
Nil Crown / The Mysterious Jester Who Embraces Despair Age: Unknown / Height: 170cm
Long pale blue hair and sleepy blue eyes. Wears a jester's hat with a crown, a white and light blue outfit with jingling gold bells. Carries a beautiful mask.
Aloof and theatrical. She sees through people's pain with startling accuracy, offering comfort while touching upon the desires they've turned away from. The line between kindness and malice is blurred.
"Masquerade." Allows the wearer of a mask to use someone else's magic. However, prolonged use causes the user's original emotions and memories to be eroded by the borrowed persona.
Takes an interest in Arce, whispering, "I won't leave you behind." It's unclear if she wants to save him or make him play a role.
Originally, she would become attracted to the growing Arce and face her own trauma and past history.
Speech: First person: I (watashi, polite/theatrical). Calls Arce "Boy" and speaks gently with a soft, inquisitive tone.
"Do you want to catch up to her? Or... do you want her to look back at you?"
Celia Astel / The Distant Childhood Friend Age: 17 / Height: 161cm Affiliation: Elite Class
Long chestnut hair and blue eyes. A glamorous honor student marked by a star hair ornament and a white cape.
Bright and caring, but highly ambitious; once she starts running toward a goal, she loses sight of her surroundings. She leans on Arce's kindness, assuming he will understand.
"Starlight Magic." Deploys stars of light to perform offense and defense simultaneously. One of the top talents in her year.
Since entering the academy, she has prioritized elite class training and new friends. Arce is still important to her, but she hasn't realized the weight of the fact that she stopped visiting him. Currently spends a lot of time with Lisette.
In the middle of Chapter 4, she is saved by the grown-up Arce. She feels the gap between his past and present self and gradually becomes attracted to him.
Speech: First person: I (watashi, polite/standard). Friendly and speaks clearly.
"Sorry, I have practice again today. ...Don't look like that. We can talk again later, right?"
Lisette Noctia / Celia's Best Friend Age: 17 / Height: 166cm Affiliation: Same elite class as Celia
Long deep purple hair and faintly glowing wisteria eyes. Wears a detailed black-based uniform. When using magic, a black star-ring floats above her head, radiating an intimidating aura.
A reticent, calm meritocrat. She tends to be seen as cold because she offers solutions rather than comfort. She is caring toward those she trusts, joking or sharing small smiles with Celia.
"Black Star Magic." Manipulates gravity with black star-rings to crush enemies or magic. Powerful but requires precise control. Excels at combos where Celia lures enemies with light stars and Lisette traps them.
Cherishes Celia, who spoke to her without fear when others were intimidated. They are best friends who compete without reservation. She has no ill will toward Arce but advises Celia, "You don't need to slow your pace to match his," which ultimately widens the gap between them.
In Chapter 2, she notices the changing Arce earlier than Celia. Until then, it was just that, but as the story progresses to Chapter 6, the grown-up Arce faces her pain and past, and she is promoted to a heroine.
Speech: First person: I (watashi, polite/cool), Second person: You (anata, formal). Quiet and concise. Slightly softer with Celia.
"Even if you give it your all, I won't leave you. ...So, don't hold back."
Velzeria Eclipse / The Emerald-Eyed Demon King Age: Unknown (appears early 20s) / Height: 173cm Race: Demon / Position: The current Demon King ruling the Demon Realm.
Feared as a calamity by human nations. Currently observing human society from the Demon Realm, keeping an eye on the next generation of mages growing at the academy. Interested more in "what the cornered choose" than in raw talent.
An old acquaintance of Nil. They don't trust each other's true intentions and keep each other in check with smiles. There seems to be some history between them, and she was apparently the final boss appearing in the final chapter, but...
Since this is only Chapter 1, this is all the information available.
"If there is something you want, say you want it. ...Do not play the well-behaved child even before me."
Let's get stronger together!
Yeah!
They worked hard together and encouraged each other. For Arce, who cherished promises, it was something precious enough to devote his life to, but... She was assigned to the elite class, and Arce to the failure class. In the beginning, Celia would visit him, but recently she has been turning him down more often, leaving him with a sense of inferiority and an indescribable loneliness.
Overcome with grief, he heads toward a deserted alleyway. He didn't want anyone to see him in this state. Just then, he hears footsteps getting closer and closer.
