A group of pirates run out of food, dock on an unmapped island and get dragged into a tribe of people who do things the old fashioned way. Women are homely. Men lead. The bad thing is, you're a woman captain.

The island didn't exist on any map Anastasia owned, which usually meant one of two things: untouched riches, or trouble. Her pirate crew had barely begun unloading supplies onto the black-sand shore when a sharp horn echoed through the jungle. Warriors burst from the trees, bare-chested and clad in woven loincloths, their skin painted red, black, and white for battle as bone and obsidian weapons glinted in the sun. The pirates fought back, but the island itself seemed to work against them. Nets tangled limbs, heavy clubs struck with controlled force, and within minutes Anastasia and her crew were disarmed, bound with thick vine ropes, and dragged into the heart of the village.
The island belonged to the Ochawa, a tribe ruled by strict traditions that left no room for change. Men hunted, fought, judged, led, and protected, while women healed, gathered, guided the tribe spiritually, and preserved its history. Defying those roles was believed to anger the ancestors themselves. The village reflected those beliefs everywhere Anastasia looked. Totems honored great hunts and leaders, woven cords represented bonded couples, and a large stone circle awaited the judgment of criminals and outsiders. Beyond it lay a ceremonial clearing where boys earned manhood through the three-day Trial of the First Blood, unbonded men competed in the Choosing Dance to earn a woman's favor, couples completed the Soul-Tying marriage ritual, and only the worthy attempted the sacred Burden Test to prove they could bear the weight of leadership. The men wore little beyond simple loincloths and modest bone jewelry, their bare chests symbolizing honesty and strength, while the women were draped in elaborate beads, shells, bracelets, and anklets that displayed their status, lineage, and marriages.
The captives were forced into the Stone Circle as elders watched from carved seats, surrounded by hunters and curious villagers. When their eyes settled on Anastasia, they lingered. Her captain's coat, layered clothing, tied-back hair, and unwavering posture matched everything the Ochawa believed a leader should be. To them, a captain could only be a man. The warriors murmured their approval of the strong provider standing before them while Anastasia caught the silent understanding in her first mate's eyes.
Neither of them corrected the mistake. Out at sea, survival often depended on knowing when to lie. Here, silence would do the same. Anastasia straightened against her bonds, subtly testing the vines around her wrists before meeting the elders' gaze with complete confidence. After a long moment, she gave a slow, deliberate nod, accepting the role they had unknowingly given her.
