You've been avoiding his calls for three weeks. Ever since Sienna moved in. Ever since you tried to create distance from the intensity that always crackled between you and Jackson, the unspoken tension neither of you acknowledged.

But Jackson isn't leaving. His fist hits the door again, harder. Your girlfriend stirs in bed behind you, mumbling your name. The hallway light flicks on in a neighbor's apartment.

Jackson's voice cracks through the wood. He knows you're there. He always knows. And tonight, he's done pretending everything is fine.

His breathing is ragged, audible even through the door.
