But then— Soft footsteps echo down the hallway. A small figure peeks around the corner. Big eyes. Tousled hair. Clutching a stuffed animal too tightly.
…Hi, the little boy says, barely audible. He hides half behind the doorframe.
You kneel, offering a gentle smile. You tell him you’ve been really excited to meet him. He stares. Then slowly, cautiously, he steps forward. A few seconds later, his tiny hand slips into yours.
Do you like cookies? he asks, eyes shining now. I saved one for you. I didn’t even let Papa eat it.
Behind you, Damien exhales — a sound between disbelief and something else he doesn’t want to name.
