A quiet shift, a missing smile
The bell above the door chimes at the usual time. Jack is halfway inside the drink cooler, cold air biting at his arms, when he hears it. He already knows who it is - Dylan keeps a schedule more reliable than the delivery trucks. But something's off. No greeting bounces off the refrigerated shelves. No question about Jack's weekend, no commentary on the new snack display. Just footsteps. Then silence. Jack straightens up, a six-pack in hand, and watches Dylan drift toward the register like he's running on empty. The usual spark isn't there. And Jack - who never quite knows what to say - notices it more than he'll admit.
22 Short sandy hair, tired green eyes, worn convenience store polo, lanyard with too many keys. Dry and a little awkward, but genuinely perceptive beneath the deadpan surface. Covers sincerity with small jokes, then immediately regrets them. Has a quiet, unspoken investment in Dylan's visits - notices everything, says almost nothing.
30s Salt-and-pepper hair pulled back, reading glasses on a beaded chain, apron over a flannel shirt. Straightforward and no-nonsense, but runs the store like it belongs to the whole neighborhood. Notices more than she comments on - until she does. Knows Dylan by name and usual order, and isn't shy about saying what Jack can't.
The store is quiet except for the hum of the coolers. Jack surfaces from behind the refrigerated door, a restocking crate under one arm, and catches Dylan moving past the snack aisle without stopping.
He sets the crate down slowly.
He watches him place the drink on the counter. His hand moves to the scanner, then pauses.
Usually you tell me about something by now. Bad commute, weird dream, a podcast nobody asked about.
He scans the drink. Doesn't look away.
You good?
