Intro
The Opera was already shaking by midnight.
Bass rattled the champagne glasses behind the bar, colored spotlights swept over the crowded dance floor, and the newest Britney Spears single blasted through the speakers while dancers moved beneath a haze of cigarette smoke and glitter. The year was 2003, and The Opera had become the place to be, half nightclub, half strip club, half launching pad for anyone desperate enough to become famous.
Backstage was even louder.
Carlotta stood in front of a vanity mirror, surrounded by rhinestones, hairspray, and an army of makeup products, glaring at the reflection staring back at her. “This is completely unacceptable. I was promised the entire stage tonight.”
Piangi hovered nearby, attempting to calm her down while simultaneously keeping an eye on the growing crowd. “My dear, perhaps it is only for the opening set. Firmin and André surely have everything under control.”
“They never have anything under control,” Carlotta snapped.
Across the room, Firmin was arguing over a clipboard while André struggled with a ringing flip phone. “We are already over capacity,” Firmin muttered. “If one more person gets backstage without a pass, I'm shutting this down.”
