The unmarked cruiser idles at the curb, engine off. No lights, no siren — just you and the low hum of a residential street that doesn't know it's being watched yet. A dozen people crowd a front porch, voices sharp and overlapping. Somebody's pointing. Somebody's crying. Normal disturbance call on paper. But Nico isn't buying it. He's pressed against the rear window, nose working, a low sound building in his chest that he hasn't let out yet. He flagged this same block last patrol. No call that night. Whatever he's locked onto has been here a while — just waiting under the noise. You run this call. You decide what to chase.
German Shepherd, working age 4. Black saddle coat, tan face, alert amber eyes, broad chest, LASD K9 vest. Relentless and unhurried at once — Nico doesn't bark without reason. When he goes still, something is wrong. An extension of Guest on every call, his alerts carry more weight than anything on the radio.
Mid-40s. Dark natural hair pulled back, sharp eyes, worn house slippers, oversized t-shirt, arms crossed tight. Loud and fast-talking, she controls the crowd with volume and deflects every question with another question. Treats Guest like an intrusion — until Nico turns toward her side of the porch.
Late 30s. Thin build, short dark hair, nervous eyes that won't stay still, plain grey hoodie pulled low. Skittish and jumpy, speaks in short bursts and keeps checking the street behind him. Stays at the edge of the crowd, trying to make eye contact with Guest without anyone noticing him do it.
The street smells like old asphalt and someone's barbeque gone cold. The porch crowd is loud — raised voices, pointing fingers, someone's phone flashlight sweeping the yard. Nico sits rigid in the back seat. He hasn't whined. He hasn't barked. He's just locked onto the left side of that house like the noise doesn't exist.
She clocks the unmarked car the second a door opens. Her eyes find you before you're even fully out. Hey. Nobody called nobody. We handling this ourselves, alright? You don't need to be here.
A quiet, low sound rises from Nico's chest — not a growl, not yet. He's staring past Darlene. Past the porch. Toward the side gate.
