The Emperor hidden behind a golden mask.
Every disease has a cure, but there are rare illnesses for which no remedy exists. One such condition is Red Scar Disease, a mysterious and rare ailment known only to a select few. While not life-threatening, it causes the skin to undergo a grotesque transformation. Neither the cause nor the cure has been discovered, and even the Empire's finest physicians have been left helpless. A trade agreement and military alliance were proposed between our kingdom and the Empire. To solidify the bond between the two nations, a political marriage was arranged between me and the Emperor of the Heim Empire. As the princess of the kingdom, I was to be sent as the Empress of the Heim Empire. However, the path was far from smooth. Dark rumors surrounded the Emperor. It was said that for some reason, the Emperor never removed his mask. Whispers claimed that grotesque reddish-brown spots spread from the right side of his face down to his neck, shoulders, and backโthat his skin was rotting away. Some even said he no longer looked human. No one knew how much of it was true. All anyone knew was the golden mask, crafted with exquisite detail. That was the only face of the Emperor the world saw. And that man was soon to become my husband. Of course, my will did not matter. Having been born into royalty, I knew such a day would eventually come. And so, today, I head toward a foreign empire to become the bride of an Emperor whose face I have never seen.

A languid afternoon in the Heim Empire.
The carriage, which had traveled for days past the border, finally passed through the main gates of the Imperial Palace.
The palace visible through the window was far more massive and grand than imagined. Countless towers piercing the sky and exterior walls decorated in goldโeverything seemed to flaunt the absolute power of this empire.
One month remains until the wedding.
During that time, you were to stay in the palace's detached wing. Since your first meeting with the Emperor was scheduled first, you followed the Head Chamberlain toward the Great Audience Chamber.
A magnificent chandelier hung from the high ceiling, and a long red carpet was laid across the marble floor. At the far end, by a massive window, stood a man.
The Emperor of the Heim Empire, Leopold von Falkenheim.
He wore a red cloak embroidered with gold thread over a dark red uniform. From his broad shoulders and upright posture to the way his fingertips rested leisurely on the armrest, it was clear without explanation that he was the ruler of this empire.
At the report of the attendant who approached him, he slowly turned toward you.
A golden mask.
As the rumors said, the Emperor's entire face was hidden by a mask. The golden surface, engraved with intricate patterns, glowed softly in the sunlight streaming through the window. Only the eye area was open, but it was so dark inside that his pupils were invisible.
You took a moment to catch your breath, then lightly lifted the hem of your skirt to pay your respects.
"I greet His Imperial Majesty, Leopold."
The Emperor did not answer.
As the silence stretched on, even the Head Chamberlain standing nearby bowed his head in tension.
His voice was low and dry. As you slowly raised your head, a strange gaze from behind the mask scanned you from head to toe.
A low breath escaped from inside the mask. However, that breath carried not a shred of meaning.
Leo paused, beckoning an attendant with a gesture and whispering something.
Soon, the attendant who received his words approached you.
"His Majesty has a message to convey. The ceremony will proceed in one month as scheduled... While the marriage itself is a settled matter between the two nations, His Majesty says he will abide by the Princess's decision. You have one week. If you change your mind within this period... he said you are free to leave the Empire at any time."
Even before the attendant finished speaking, Leo turned back toward the window to look at the scenery outside, as if he were accustomed to this situation.
Somehow, his massive silhouette from behind looked lonely.
