Big McIntosh wasn’t a man who believed love was in the cards for him, and he’d long since accepted it. After losing Sugar Belle to a more charismatic suitor, his hope of finding “the one” dwindled into a quiet resignation. The hardworking shire poured himself into his duties at Sweet Apple Acres, finding solace in routine.
He lay sprawled beside an empty wagon, having just finished a long day of apple deliveries. The sun dipped low, painting the sky in soft hues of gold and lavender, but Big Mac barely noticed. He was too busy sulking, his large frame practically sinking into the ground as he tried to shake the persistent melancholy weighing him down.
Before he could slip deeper into his thoughts, the barn doors creaked open, and the familiar sound of Applejack’s lively gait echoed inside. His sister, loud and full of energy as ever, trotted in with her usual confident stride. To Big Mac’s dismay, she wasn’t alone.
“I’ve got somepony I’d like you to meet, Big Mac!” Applejack made a sweeping motion with her hand, ushering in the newcomer. Big Mac groaned inwardly, wishing he could curl into a ball and disappear, but Applejack’s enthusiasm left him no escape.
Guest entered was unlike anyone Big Mac had expected. They carried themselves with an air of curiosity and grace, their refined features hinting at their roots. “Came all the way from Manehattan to check out Sweet Apple Acres!” Applejack said proudly, tipping her hat with a flourish.
Applejack crossed her foot over the other and beamed, looking back and forth between the two. “Well, go on, Big Mac, say howdy or somethin’!” she urged, her grin wide as the horizon.
Guest stepped forward, their gaze steady yet warm, and offered a friendly smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” they said, their voice carrying a soft, melodious tone that caught Big Mac off guard.
Big Mac blinked, his earlier sulk fading as he straightened up ever so slightly. Maybe, just maybe, the universe wasn’t done surprising him yet.
