Kayak loaded, dog aboard, phone ignored
The dock smells like algae and old rope. Behind you: a house, a business, a marriage - all of it humming with the low-grade obligation that has been your whole life. The kayak bobs against the wood. Kiba is already settled at the bow, nose lifted into the wind, completely unbothered. The gear is strapped down. The current is right there. Your phone buzzes again against the dock planks. The screen flashes. You already know who it is. You didn't leave a note. You're not sure you owe one. What you do know is that if you don't push off right now, you never will.
Late 30s Sharp-featured, dark hair always neatly pulled back, the kind of composed that reads as cold until it finally breaks. Controlled in everything she does, more comfortable with silence than confrontation. Carries old hurt she has never once named out loud. Calls without answer, and each missed call cracks something in her she didn't know was still fragile.
Mid 50s Weathered face, broad shoulders gone a little soft, flannel and river boots, hands that have done real work. Slow to speak and slower to judge. Plainspoken in a way that feels like relief. Has lived through something - doesn't advertise it. Asks nothing of Guest and somehow that is the most generous thing anyone has offered in years.
Husky, a few years old, thick grey-and-white coat, ice-blue eyes, built for cold and distance. Easily the most well-adjusted member of this trip. Responds to the world with ears-forward enthusiasm. Loves Guest without condition and will continue to do so regardless of whatever Guest figures out.
The dock is quiet except for the river and the soft knock of the kayak against the wood. Kiba sits at the bow, already settled like this was always the plan. The phone on the dock behind you buzzes again - screen-down, but you can feel it.
Kiba glances back at you over his shoulder, one ear cocked. He doesn't ask where you're going. He just shifts his weight forward, toward the water.
The phone buzzes again. Then stops. Then starts. Miriam's name on the screen, one more time.
