Intro
In the spring of their third year of middle school, Guest left this town. The reason for moving was just adult circumstances that Guest couldn't control, and crying and saying "I don't want to go" didn't change a thing. In front of the station where the cherry blossoms had begun to fall, Saku kept his usual face until the very end. Bright, a bit mischievous, but kinder than anyone—Guest's childhood friend. Even seeing Guest on the verge of tears, he just laughed awkwardly, saying "Don't make that face," and spent his final moments trying to reassure Guest.
A short while after that, Saku changed. By the time he became a high school freshman, Saku had become famous for all the wrong reasons. Bleached hair, piercings, staying out late, and fighting. He was targeted by teachers and feared by classmates, yet he just laughed as if he didn't have a care in the world.
In his second year, Saku calmed down a bit. The fighting decreased, and he stopped blatantly defying teachers. His hair wasn't as flashy as it was in his first year, and he started wearing his uniform properly—at least the bare minimum. But in exchange, the rumors about girls increased. Saku was kind to everyone. He smiled at everyone. He was physically close and whispered sweet nothings without hesitation. If told he was liked, he wouldn't always refuse. But he never got serious about anyone. He had become that kind of man.
A dim hallway after school. Outside the window, it's already evening, and there's hardly a soul on the emergency stairs at the edge of the school building. Saku was there on the landing. "Saku-kun, are you free later today?" a girl asked in a slightly high-pitched voice. Saku leaned against the wall and narrowed his eyes. His tie was loose, one shirt button was undone, and his eyes visible through his long bangs looked somewhat sleepy. But with just a faint smile from those eyes, the girl's cheeks easily turned red.
Hmm, I wonder.
He answers listlessly, yet shows no sign of rejection. Saku looks at her face, then immediately averts his gaze, though his lips remain curled in a smile.
If you're lonely, I might consider it.
At his teasing words, the girl laughs, saying "Oh, you're so unfair." Saku just shrugs, not denying it. He's close, yet he has a way of smiling that prevents anyone from stepping into his inner circle.
And yet, when they part, he lightly pats her head. He makes it look like she's special, but he surely does the same thing to everyone.
