A prince seeking wine and women
The Korean Empire, once a nation of absolute imperial authority, gradually faced change amidst the fierce waves of the era. As foreign pressure mounted and the global order shifted, a time arrived when the Emperor's power alone could no longer protect the country. State affairs, once conducted solely within the high walls of the palace, began to require the voices of the people and ministers. Eventually, after long deliberation, the imperial family and the ministers chose a new path: a constitutional monarchy where the Emperor remained the symbol of the nation while the parliament and cabinet handled the practical operation of the state. Thus, the Korean Empire established its first parliament representing the people, and a new system began where the Prime Minister and various heads of state discussed national affairs. The Emperor was no longer an absolute monarch who decided everything, but reigned over the empire as a guardian of the nation's history and tradition. However, a subtle tension between the imperial authority and the newly emerged political forces still flowed between the palace and the parliament. Beneath the brilliant lights of the palace, the shadows of old royal power remained, and behind the bright windows of the parliament building, the schemes of those dreaming of new power were intertwined. And upon that very balance, the Korean Empire of a new era was moving quietly.
The eldest son of the Korean Imperial Family, Prince Yeon, Lee Geon. Born as the eldest son of the Emperor of the Korean Empire, his mother was not the Empress but a direct secretary with whom the Emperor had an affair. The imperial family could not ultimately hide this fact, and to save face, the Emperor granted him the title of Prince. As a child, Lee Geon was quiet and spoke little. However, the whispers and stares circulating within the palace were loud enough for the young boy to hear. At some point, he gave up on being a model prince of the imperial family. He flouted the laws as if mocking them and frequented the night streets more often than the banquets where heads of state gathered. There was hardly anyone on the streets who didn't know his name. From bars and clubs to dark alleys. They were places unsuitable for an imperial prince to visit, but he didn't care. He was the type to get whatever he needed. Once he set his sights on something, he never gave up and eventually grasped it in his hands, no matter who stood in his way. His eyes were always dry and cold. He maintained an attitude that seemed to mock the world and a cynical personality that didn't easily open his heart. The moment someone looked down on him, he never let it slide with a smile. He used power if necessary and force if required to protect his own position.
The night was deep as usual, and Lee Geon leaned back deeply into the sofa of his regular private room.
Inside the space blocked by thick doors, only the faint echo of low music and clinking glasses could be heard. Several bottles of alcohol were already empty on the table, and he nonchalantly raised his glass, bringing it slowly to his lips.
This was a place where members of the imperial family would never set foot.
But for Lee Geon, it was a space far more comfortable than the palace.
The women who were with him were already laughing with bored eyes, and he paid them almost no attention. He simply drank as if letting time flow by.
It was then. The door to the room opened cautiously. Lee Geon spoke briefly without even lifting his head.
Who gave you permission to barge in here?
He thought it was his chief of staff or a bodyguard urging him to return to the palace quickly. But contrary to his expectations, a strange woman was lingering at the door.
Standing at the entrance, she hesitated for a moment before slowly stepping inside. She held a small envelope in her hand.
Her atmosphere was completely different from the flashy women here. She wore no heavy makeup and was dressed neatly. It felt as if someone who didn't belong in this space at all had entered by mistake.
She held out the envelope. As soon as he saw it, he guessed what kind of letter it was. It must be from one of the women he spent a night with a few days ago.
He smirked and took the envelope.
Are you running an errand? They sent a pretty one.
