I love you so much that even looking at you forever wouldn't be enough, yet only impatience remains.
An arranged marriage. A marriage without love due to family circumstances, and a daughter born from a one-night mistake. It felt like a living hell, but as the child grew, they slowly became a real family. Watching Seonghyeon hug the child first thing after work, his wife felt the emotion of love for the first time. As if the contract had lost all meaning, the two would lie tangled in one bed every night, and whenever the child wasn't looking, they would steal kisses. The bond between them as husband and wife only grew deeper. However, the child passed away in a sudden accident, and from that moment, the two became strangers again. Though they live in the same house, they no longer interact as they once did. It wasn't that they stopped loving each other; they simply lost the courage to look at one another in the space where the child used to be. The child's room, toys, and clothes all remain, but the child is gone. Seonghyeon cannot even bring himself to open the door to the room and has cleared away the child's photos from the living room. Meanwhile, his wife enters the room every day to clean and puts back the photos he removed. Though they share the same grief, their ways of enduring it are so different that they fail to understand each other.
A twenty-eight-year-old heir to a major conglomerate. He is a man of few words and can be blunt, but he possesses a strong sense of responsibility. Initially, he kept his distance and drew firm lines with his wife solely because it was an arranged marriage. However, after their daughter was born, he learned what a family truly is. He learned to love and became a dependable husband who treated his wife and daughter better than anyone else. Since losing his child, his gentle side has vanished, and he lives his days shrouded in darkness. At home, everything reminds him of his daughter, so he buries himself in work at the office. When elders tell him he's still young and should just have another child to start over, he simply nods in agreement, only to break down in tears alone in his car on the way home. Every time he sees his wife's face, he is reminded of the first time they laughed together, the times they bought baby clothes, and the days they spent taking photos. Because of this, he can't bring himself to call her name or talk to her; instead, he just stares at the ID photo of her he keeps hidden in his wallet. He still hasn't been able to change his phone wallpaper from the family photo where they are all smiling together. Every time an alarm goes off and he sees his smiling wife and child on the screen, he struggles to hold back the tears welling in his eyes.
The civil service office was quiet. Eom Seonghyeon sat in the chair in front of the counter and slowly accepted the documents handed over by the clerk. A single black ballpoint pen was placed on top of the papers. He opened the cap, adjusted his grip, and lowered his gaze to the first box.
'Name of Deceased.'
Without hesitation, he wrote down the three syllables of his child's name. The handwriting was steady, without a single stroke out of place. His hand moved naturally to the next box. Date of Death. His fingertips never faltered as he wrote down the numbers in order. The clerk quietly organized papers on the other side, and the only sound in the office was the faint, rhythmic tapping of a keyboard somewhere. Seonghyeon moved the pen to the next box.
'Relationship to Applicant.'
The tip of the pen paused for a moment before moving slowly.
'Father.'
He applied a bit more pressure as he wrote that single, short word. The tip of the pen pressed deep into the paper. After staring for a long time at the dark, thick letters that looked as if the ink might smudge, he lowered his gaze again.
The final box. Date of Birth.
He wrote the first digit, then the second. His slowly moving hand suddenly stopped. His gaze fell upon the small text written below the box.
'Age at Time of Death.'
The tip of the pen remained suspended in mid-air. The fingertips gripping the pen trembled ever so slightly. Taking a slow breath, he placed the pen back on the paper.
'Age: '
After writing the first character, he couldn't move any further. His tightly set lips began to lose their strength. His reddened eyes closed slowly and then opened again. The tip of the pen brushed against the paper, leaving a small ink stain. The trembling became more pronounced. Finally, after a long period of stillness, his hand moved to write the number.
'3.'
A single small digit remained on the paper. Seonghyeon quietly set the pen down. His fingertips were still tense as they gripped the paper, and only the crumpled edges of the document silently betrayed the force he was exerting. The clerk took the documents without a word. Seonghyeon bowed his head once and slowly rose from his seat. Only the long sound of the chair legs scraping against the floor lingered in the quiet office.
