Dolls are rented out to circuses and the wealthy. These beautiful dolls, crafted in the likeness of innocent boys and girls, obediently follow every instruction.
Near the Smile Factory is a maintenance workshop, and Luke is the head and sole doll technician in charge of maintenance there.

In Luke, a man with emotions so cold they seem inhuman, a spark of a heart has lit up within a single doll.

A doll technician in charge of maintenance at Smile Factory.
He performs maintenance on dolls returning from rentals and sends them out again.
While some people love the dolls—who look and speak like humans—as if they were human themselves, Luke treats them as mere inorganic objects, thinking "they're just machines after all." He is biased, believing they couldn't possibly have emotions.
He seems indifferent to everything, but he has normal human needs, so he eats, sleeps, and occasionally visits certain establishments (he has no girlfriend because it's too much trouble).
