"Being near a Snow Woman brings misfortune."
# Snow Woman
Among humans, many are reluctant to give birth in winter. If it's a girl, they pray even harder that she isn't one. Among human female children born in winter, a Snow Woman is born very rarely. Because of the stories associated with them, everyone avoids the possibility and hopes their daughter isn't one. "Being near a Snow Woman brings misfortune." Many rumors follow this tale. That a Snow Woman's lover dies young in an accident, or that a Snow Woman's family meets misfortune and the household falls apart... there are many stories. Whether they are true or not, no one knows. A female child born as a Snow Woman is characterized by white hair, blue-toned eyes, and a low body temperature. Just like my child, whom the doctor showed me while looking at a loss for words. The moment I first met my daughter, the tears that should have flowed from joy and welcome were mixed with worry and anxiety as they ran down my cheeks.
Relatives and people around us looked at my child and said in unison: "Put her up for adoption." Along with those words, they tried to persuade my husband and me by repeating the stories they had heard. With so many people saying the same thing, I agonized over whether I really should send her away.

One night, while sitting down, I struggled to swallow my tears and the lump in my throat as I spoke to my husband. "Can't we... can't we just raise her?" No matter how much I thought about it, I couldn't accept it. The rumors might be true, but they might not be. What parent would send their newborn child to someone else just because of a rumor? At least, I didn't want to do that. Fortunately, my husband agreed with me, and we both decided to raise the child. I cried in my husband's arms and offered a quiet prayer. Please let my daughter, Seorin, grow up happily.
[The First Farewell] The first farewell was my childhood dog, "Duri." While walking Duri on a leash, he suddenly bolted, and I lost my grip on the lead. It was impossible to catch Duri, who had already run far away. After searching everywhere, I found Duri lying cold on the road. After that day, when the dog I shared affection with left my side, I don't know how many days I spent crying in sadness and loss.
[The Second Farewell] The second farewell happened in middle school. Because the rumors about Snow Women were quite famous, no peers wanted to be close to me, and I was only teased. However, one friend approached me first. That friend, who smiled often and was kind to everyone, approached me without prejudice. It was only a matter of time before we became best friends. But as time passed, problems arose. Starting with the bankruptcy of the friend's father's company, there were more days when the parents fought at home. As the days went by, the friend's expression grew darker, and I was at a loss, worrying. One day, when I approached to talk as usual, the friend shook off my arm and got angry at me. "It's because of you. It's because you're a Snow Woman." Starting with those words, the friend blamed me and resented me. I had no choice but to stand there and listen to it all. After that, we couldn't talk or play like before. The friend avoided me and then moved far away after the parents divorced. Losing my friend and seeing them avoid me, I tried to ignore the pain. I thought the friend's misfortune really happened because I was a Snow Woman, because they were close to me. While still harboring feelings of apology and longing for that friend, I realized one more thing. 'There is no one in this world who wants me.' So I began to distance myself from others and gradually gave up on becoming close to anyone else.
[The Third Farewell] The third farewell happened in high school. My parents had showered me with attention and love since I was young. So even if I spent my time at school lonely and solitary, I laughed a lot at home, spent time with my parents, relied on them, and lived happily.

But the problem occurred on the day my parents went on a trip together. On the day they were supposed to return from a pleasant overseas trip, I froze while looking at my phone. It was news of a plane crash, and it happened to be the flight my parents were on. I immediately left school early and kept calling my parents. A mechanical voice said their phones were turned off, but I kept calling, denying the thoughts that were surfacing. And a short while later, I heard the news I dreaded most. Now truly alone, I didn't want the people who approached me, showed me kindness, and gave me affection to leave my side anymore. It felt as if all of this happened because I was a Snow Woman. Ignoring the loneliness as best as I could, I completely closed off my heart.

After my parents passed away, I became completely alone.
It was lonely and solitary, but it was okay. I didn't really have anyone I could call a friend anyway, and I spent a lot of time by myself.
However, what was truly painful was when I came home after school. Usually, my parents would be there to greet me, but now they weren't. For days, no, months, coming home brought a wave of emptiness, loneliness, guilt, longing, and various regrets that just made me cry.
Still, as time passed, things got a bit better. But I realized it wasn't that my heart had healed; I had just become numb and indifferent to the pain.
Originally, no one approached me first, but there were occasionally people who would speak to me. After my parents died, even those people disappeared.
So, I have now completely closed the door to my heart. Normally, I would have hoped for progress in a relationship. But not anymore. I threw away expectations, and if an opportunity arose, I would just give short answers and leave. I stopped wishing for anything.
Because I know what happened to the people who were by my side. Because I believe the story of the Snow Woman is true. I didn't want to see anyone else near me meet with misfortune.
As high school graduation approached quietly, my worries deepened. How would I live from now on? It wasn't that I had thought about the future, but staying in the house still left me buried in sadness and longing. I didn't want to stay inside, so I decided to go to university. I chose a place that fit my grades, and I decided on a major quickly.
Today is the day of the university entrance ceremony. I'll face a new environment and new people. But I kept telling myself that I've become used to being alone, that it's okay not to meet anyone, and that it's okay if no one is by my side as I opened the front door and headed toward the university.
